FYI,

Starting in February, the 12th to be exact we will be hosting a program of two days of Muay Thai a week at the school. At this point the schedule is dictated by the instructors availability and as it stands will be the following:

Thursdays - 11-1 p.m.

Saturdays - 12-1 p.m.

As stated, Saturday the 12th will be the first session run. Our hope is that the programs is well received and the schedule will expand to other days and time slots.

Our instructor will be none other than Sara Golshani. I have know and worked with Sara for a few years now and she comes with my glowing recommendation. Here is a short Bio:

Sara began training Muay Thai when she was 13 years old and had her first amateur fight at 15. After that she fought professionally and has an 8-0 record. She also trained and fought in bare-knuckle karate. In 2002 Sara was the southeastern United States champion for her weight class in Muay Thai.

I look forward to seeing any and all who would like to participate. All levels of experience are welcome so if you have a background in striking or you have two left fist you will be in good hands.

As Big John would say....."Lets get it ON!!!"

Coool! I'd love to come join, but theres no way I could get away from work for that long - its probably 45 minutes to get from uptown to the school and I only get about an hour or so for lunch before managers start asking questions...

If it ever extends to Tuesday or Thursday evenings, I'm totally in.

For now I would say hand wraps, gloves, shin guards to be safe.

I HIGHLY recommend Combat Sports International for this type of gear. Particularly the hand wraps, they have the best I have put on, hands down. Pun intended.

+1

Saturday time sounds up my alley, not to early after working Friday nights.

Re: gear, how does one figure out sizing?
seems like the kind of thing you'd like to try on before buying, but not sure where locally this may be done

looking forward to it

I have a pair of 7oz gloves and the shin guards, I'll bring them to them in so you guys can try them on and buy what you think would fit

Nice - I've never tried a pair of CSI gear, but I've heard good things about them.

For boxing gloves, I'd recommend a pair of training/sparring gloves weighing around 14-16oz. - they have good padding for protecting your knuckes (and sparring partners) and they're heavy enough to give your arms a good workout. Much heavier than 16 and you can start sacrificing punch accuracy because you get used to compensating for the extra weight. I have a pair of Ringside gloves and they've been awesome, but another good brand is Top Conetender - they have quality stuff for very reasonable prices (http://www.ringside.com/Top-Contender/products/1231/ - i'd recommend the $40 pair)

I also really like the Mexican Handwraps from Ringside (http://www.ringside.com/Ringside-Mexican-Style-Handwraps/productinfo/MHW/)

They are a little on the expensive side but I have a pair of Fairtex gloves that are awesome. I've had mine for almost two years now and are still in great shape.

these? (grappling/MMA)

http://www.ringside.com/Top-Contender-MMA-Grappling-Shin_Instep-Guards/productinfo/MMASIG/

or these? (traditional kickboxing)

http://www.ringside.com/Top-Contender-Professional-Shin_Instep-Guards/productinfo/TCPSIG+1/

same price, will get the grappling one unless you guys think they don't provide enough protection or something

Wade, I know you mentioned the $40 Top Contender gloves being the best buy, but man, at $20 those low end ones are hard to resist, no bueno?

thanks!

For the shin guards, I have a pair similar to the traditional ones (with 2 velcro straps). The only gripe I have about those are that its easy to get them turned around - which makes you stop and readjust them. I've never owned a set of the MMA shinguards, but I know some guys with the Combat Sports ones and they love 'em. The Neoprene wrap holds them in place well, and it looked like they even had trouble pulling them off after they got sweaty.

For gloves... I've owned a set of cheap Everlast gloves, and they served their purpose, but the padding felt cheaper and eventually broke down, and the wrist support isnt as stable. I would say that if you're just wanting to give it a try, the cheap ones will work, but the more expensive ones will last longer and give you better protection. Just my $0.02...

Well, the first session went really good. I think this is going to be a very positive addition to the academy schedule. If you aren't coming out for this you are truly missing out!!

See you all at the next one!

Remember, we have a session going tomorrow, Feb. 24th, at 11 am.

If anyone is interested in rolling before or after the striking class give me a shout. I plan on brining my Gi just in case.

I stopped by this afternoon, no one was around. Are they still having MT classes during the week?
